I run an older Linux kernel so it did not work out of the box which I expected, however the instructions to download the drivers were clear and simple and worked without any problems. Very impressed this is running on a 15 year old desktop. Very surprised it worked so easily.
As presented, yes, it work with Linux distros that are Debian based. In my case it is a old HP 8000 dual core enterprise compact desktop running Mint 20 XFCE.Installation wasn't exactly a breeze, but thanks to another review that documented the wget shell command, I knew what to look for and it worked out.I didn't try that directly, I tried what came with the adapter. The QR code on the box was read by Amazon App on my phone, but all it linked to was marketing stuff as far as I could see; maybe I missed it in all that chaff. What did work was:1. Inserted the adapter into a USB 3.0 slot while leaving the older/slower USB in place.2. The file manager opened and showed some files. Sadly, there was only the Windows driver .exe there. There is a ReadMe and it had a URL for support, but those pages only listed the Windows Drivers.3. Did a web search for "BrosTrend AX7PL linux driver" which took me to a different page made up of linux dot brostrend dot com. This is the one with the wget command down a screen or two: sh -c 'wget linux.brostrend.com/install -O /tmp/install && sh /tmp/install'4. This loads a loader program, selected option "f" for the "AX7P" (AX7PL wasn't listed), and ran it.5. That then loaded the proper driver6. Powered off, removed the old USB adapter, rebooted. Opened tray network icon, selected my wireless SSID, gave it credentials, and it connected. Some shell commands that show what this is:$ lsusbBus 002 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0002 Linux Foundation 2.0 root hubBus 008 Device 002: ID 0bda:8771 Realtek Semiconductor Corp. To be fair, I've had to manually download USB/Wifi adapter drivers for Linux before, and that time was harder because I had to figure out the RealTek chipset exact model -- they make/have made so many over the years. My only complaint is that the antenna only rotates 180 degrees, so because of the orientation of the USB slot, the antenna is pointed down instead of up (see photo). Nevertheless it works. Oh, BTW, the photo shows the hardware as "AX7P" which makes sense regarding the driver selection. I suspect the "AX7PL" is just a packaging difference to target a Linux/Debian style audience.Anyway, this is the third BrosTrend Ethernet adapter I've purchased, and all of them work fine. A BrosTrend 5Gb PCIe Network Card (Windows), a BrosTrend BE6500 USB WiFi 7 Adapter (Windows), and now this one. All have worked reliably so far. I'd never heard of them until about a year ago, but I have to say they do pretty good work and are now of my personal list of recommended vendors. Happy!
Works great on Linux, use your phone and a USB cable for an initial connection then go to the website and run the command and you're done
I struggled for days as I didnt even open the instructions. I instead tried to utilize ChatGPT, which also kept painting me into corners. I then consulted with the "Claude"AI assistant and was provided with this LINUX command. It absolutely saved the day. It worked flawlessly and ultimately took about 10 minutes or so to download what it needed and run the installation process. Just enter the command, press enter, and sit back. Connection has been solid with no disconnects or sudden speed reduction.sh -c 'wget linux.brostrend.com/install -O /tmp/install && sh /tmp/install'
Works as intended, no issues so far.
